Steps to Become a USA Hockey Coach
USA Hockey and the Coaching Education Program require both certification and registration to be eligible to coach. Registration is done online on a yearly basis. Certification is also required. A few basic steps requirements are as follows (Must be completed before participating in any team activities):
1.) USA Hockey Requirements (Must be completed before participating in any team activities)
Register as a member of USA Hockey. (Cost is $46 plus any affiliate fees if applicable). Click here for more information.
2.) Complete the Coaching Education Program Online Age-Specific Requirements (Must be completed PRIOR to participating in any team activities and cannot be added to a roster until completed)
- Complete the online age-specific module(s) for the age level of play you are coaching (Cost is $10 per module and only needs to be completed once per age level) Click here to register for the modules.
3.) Complete the background screening (found on your affiliate website and some affiliates require approval before you can be added to a roster).

The required background check clearances include:
1. Criminal History Record Information HERE obtained from the Pennsylvania State Police (every year).
2. Child Abuse Clearance HERE obtained through the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services certifying the applicant is not named in the statewide database “as the alleged perpetrator in a pending child abuse investigation or as the perpetrator of a founded report or indicated report” of child abuse.” (every 3 years).
3. Federal Criminal History Record Information obtained by submitting a full set of fingerprints to Cogent Systems for submission to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. (fee applies)** (every 5 years)
**Volunteers are not required to complete the FBI clearance (#3) if they have lived continuously in Pennsylvania over the previous 10 years and are working an unpaid position or a volunteer. However, they must swear or affirm in writing that they are not barred from volunteering due to a conviction or offense under §6344. HERE Individuals who reside outside of Pennsylvania may serve as a volunteer for no more than 30 days as long as they provide clearances from their home state or county. Those volunteering longer than 30 days must obtain clearance through the state of Pennsylvania.
4.) Complete the USA Hockey Safe Sport Training (The SafeSport Training and Refresher Training are each valid for one (1) season beginning on 4/1/19.

5.) Complete the Coaching Education Program Certification Clinic Requirements (Must be completed by Dec. 31)
